What we do

How it works

What a safety switch does

A safety switch — also called an RCD (residual current device) — monitors the current flowing in and out of a circuit. When it detects a difference caused by current leaking to earth (through a person, a wet appliance or damaged wiring), it disconnects the circuit in milliseconds.

Circuit breakers protect wiring from overload and short circuits. RCDs protect people. Both are needed.

Where safety switches should be fitted

  • All power (general purpose outlet) circuits.
  • All lighting circuits.
  • Hardwired appliance circuits — cooktops, ovens, hot water, air conditioning.
  • Bathroom, laundry and outdoor circuits where water risk is higher.

Older Melbourne homes often have RCD protection on some circuits but not others. We can assess your board and fit RCDs where they're missing.

Testing safety switches

Safety switches should be tested regularly by pressing the "Test" button on the RCD. If the switch doesn't trip, it isn't protecting the circuit — call an electrician.

If your safety switch keeps tripping every time you reset it, don't leave it in the on position. That usually means there's a genuine fault on the circuit that needs to be traced.

Types of RCD we install

  • DIN-rail RCBOs — combined RCD and circuit breaker on a single device, protecting one circuit each. Ideal when you want independent tripping per circuit so a fault on one appliance doesn't kill your lights or fridge.
  • Two-pole RCDs — one RCD covering a group of circuits. Cheaper but a single fault trips everything downstream. Common on older boards.
  • Portable RCDs — plug-in units for outdoor tools and temporary circuits. Useful as a stopgap, not a substitute for a fixed device.

On most residential upgrades we recommend RCBOs — safer, easier to diagnose, and less disruptive when a fault does occur.

Standards and compliance

The AS/NZS 3000 Wiring Rules require RCD protection (typically 30 mA) on all new and altered final sub-circuits — power, lighting and hardwired appliance circuits. For Victorian rental properties, RCD testing forms part of the mandatory two-yearly electrical safety check under the Residential Tenancies Regulations 2021. All prescribed work is certified on completion with an Electrical Safety Certificate under Energy Safe Victoria.

Are safety switches required in Victorian homes?

Repeated tripping usually means there's a real fault — a damaged appliance, wet wiring, or a deteriorating cable. The RCD is doing its job. Don't tape it in the on position; have the circuit tested.

Can you fit safety switches to an old switchboard?

Often yes, but it depends on the board type and available space. If there's no room or the board is at end of life, a full switchboard upgrade is usually a better fix.
