What we do

SparkAir upgrades and replaces residential and small commercial switchboards across Melbourne. We install modern boards with individual circuit breakers and RCD safety switches, sized for your current electrical load and future additions like EV chargers or split system air conditioning.

How it works

Why upgrade your switchboard

Older Melbourne homes often still have ceramic rewireable fuses, no RCDs, and boards that were never designed for modern loads. That creates real problems:

  • No RCD protection on general power and lighting circuits.
  • Repeatedly tripping fuses or breakers under normal load.
  • Not enough space for new circuits (EV charger, air conditioning, solar).
  • Signs of overheating — discoloured plastic, brown marks or a burning smell.
  • Water damage, rust or asbestos backing boards.

An upgrade brings the board up to current standards and gives you a safer, more reliable base to add loads to.

  4. Reconnection and labelling of each circuit.
  5. Testing, energising and issue of the required Electrical Safety Certificate.

Where required, we'll coordinate with your distributor for meter isolation and reconnection.

Planning for future loads

A switchboard upgrade is a good moment to plan for the loads you're likely to add in the next few years, so you don't pay to reopen the board twice:

  • Reverse-cycle air conditioning — single-head or multi-head split systems typically want their own circuit.
  • EV charging — a dedicated 32 A Mode 3 circuit is standard for an EV charger.
  • Induction cooktops and ovens — modern induction cooktops usually need a heavier dedicated circuit than the old electric cooktop they replace.
  • Solar and battery — space and configuration on the board for a future PV inverter or battery hybrid.

Building in a few spare ways now is cheaper than a second visit later.

Standards and compliance

Switchboards are installed and modified to the AS/NZS 3000 Wiring Rules, with RCD protection on all final sub-circuits as required. Boards containing asbestos backing are removed under the appropriate controls. As prescribed electrical work, each upgrade is certified with an Electrical Safety Certificate on completion under Energy Safe Victoria requirements.

How long does a switchboard upgrade take?

Most residential switchboard upgrades are completed in a single day, including power isolation, board replacement, testing and re-energising. Larger boards or those requiring distributor coordination can take longer.

Do I need to upgrade my switchboard for an EV charger or air conditioner?

Sometimes. We assess your existing board's spare capacity, RCD protection and main supply before recommending an upgrade. If the board can safely take the new circuit, an upgrade isn't required.

Is a switchboard upgrade the same as adding a safety switch?

No. Adding an RCD (safety switch) to an existing board is a smaller job. A full upgrade replaces the enclosure, breakers and RCDs and brings the whole board up to current standards.

Will you provide an Electrical Safety Certificate?

Yes. Switchboard upgrades are prescribed electrical work, so we issue an Electrical Safety Certificate on completion as required under Energy Safe Victoria.

Do I need to disconnect the power for a switchboard upgrade?

Yes — power to the property is off while the board is replaced. Most residential upgrades are completed in a single day, and we plan the timing so fridges and freezers aren't off for long. Where meter isolation is required, we coordinate with your distributor.

My switchboard has an asbestos backing — is that a problem?

It's manageable. Asbestos backing boards were common until the late 1980s and are removed under the appropriate controls as part of the upgrade. We'll flag it in the quote so there are no surprises on the day.
