How it works

What a proper EV charger installation includes

  • Site assessment of your switchboard, main supply and available capacity.
  • A dedicated circuit from the switchboard to the charger location.
  • Correctly rated cable, isolator and RCD for the charger.
  • Mounting the wall unit or pedestal in a safe, weather-appropriate position.
  • Commissioning, testing and Wi-Fi/app setup if the unit supports it.
  • Electrical Safety Certificate on completion.

Plugging an EV into a standard 10A powerpoint is slow and not designed for repeated long charging sessions. A dedicated Mode 3 charger is safer and much faster.

Choosing between single-phase and three-phase

Most Melbourne homes are single-phase, which supports chargers up to around 7.4 kW. Three-phase supply supports up to 22 kW charging where the vehicle and switchboard allow. We'll confirm what your supply and switchboard can handle before quoting.

If your board is old or full, you may need a switchboard upgrade before the charger circuit can be added.

Load management and solar

Many modern EV chargers support load management — reducing charge rate when the house load is high, and charging from surplus solar when available. We install units that suit your setup and configure them for your usage pattern.

Where the charger goes matters

The charger location shapes the cable run, cost and long-term convenience. Common Melbourne scenarios:

  • Attached garage or carport — the tidiest run in most cases. Short cable back to the board, weather-protected, and easy to fit an isolator beside the unit.
  • Detached garage — usually needs a longer underground or overhead run, and sometimes a sub-board on the garage side to keep voltage drop and cable size sensible.
  • Driveway or carport with no wall — a pedestal-mounted charger with a concrete base, cable armouring and IP-rated fittings.
  • Apartments and townhouses — usually needs body-corporate approval and coordination with the building's meter and common-area wiring. We can quote around what's already approved.

Standards and compliance

EV charger installations follow the AS/NZS 3000 Wiring Rules and AS/NZS 3.1.12 for EV supply equipment — dedicated circuit, correctly rated cable and isolator, and Type A or Type B RCD protection as required by the charger's specification. Prescribed work is certified with an Electrical Safety Certificate on completion under Energy Safe Victoria requirements. Where your distributor requires notification of new dedicated EV loads, we handle that during the install.

Do I need a dedicated circuit for my EV charger?

Yes. Mode 3 EV chargers must run on their own dedicated circuit from the switchboard, with correctly rated cable, isolator and RCD protection to AS/NZS 3000 and AS/NZS 3.1.12.

How long does an EV charger installation take?

A standard wall-mounted charger with a short cable run from the switchboard is often a same-day install. Longer runs, sub-boards, three-phase upgrades or complex charger positions can push it to two visits.

Do I need to notify anyone before installing an EV charger?

In some cases the electricity distributor asks to be notified about a new dedicated EV load, particularly on three-phase installs or larger chargers. We handle any required notification as part of the installation.
